The Mustangs of Cotopaxi

This delightful potpourri of stories begins with a young woman’s dream of training spirited mustangs captured from the slopes of the South American volcano Cotopaxi.

In The Adventures of Fat Frannie, a wealthy Irish student leaves Ireland to live on a Texas ranch, where she discovers her talent as a singer; in Edgar, a Texas Farmer, a farmer who lives without comforts or conveniences
re-invents his life after his recalcitrant daughter leaves town. Snake Pit is an account of an American couple who keep several hundred rattlesnakes in a large pit in Mexico as a tourist attraction. Abe and Susanna takes place in Galveston, Jamaica, and New Orleans. It portrays the intertwining of lives of a religiously uptight botanist, a sixties-style “flower girl,” and a black violinist who walks white wolf dogs through the streets of the French Quarter.
Ana’s Eyes is about a young girl in Barcelona who trains her dog using her eyes. Three stories are somewhat light-hearted in nature: Edna: a Scatological Tale; A Beach Rat’s Perfect Crime; and The Mudflat Letters. Emptiness, in contrast, deals with conflicts that lead to a murder at sea. Three other sketches describe a canoe trip down a tributary of the Amazon river to visit a Siona Indian village; a student who murders a custodian for keys to a university building; and an unconventional friendship with a South American prostitute.
